About Me:
My favourite part of my job is spending a few hours in a back-and-forth session with a founder team testing out their customer proposition or debating out how to solve some tricky issue that has come up for the company – maybe it is a former happy customer that is now unhappy or maybe it is an urgent need to take the company in a new direction.
What’s important for me in these sessions is not the answer, per se, but rather seeing the ability of the founders to problem-solve in real time, their openness to re-think their business and their willingness to take on board (or maybe discard) the views of others. The best entrepreneurs are the ones who can figure out before anyone else that there is a train coming around the corner – no companies get to an exit without a near death experience or two along the way.
The last thing I do before making any investment is to sit back and mull over whether I want to work with these founders on a sustained basis for the next 5-+ years. If the answer is Yes, then great. If the answer is No, then the answer is No. Founders need to ask themselves the same question of their investors.
